Your gym kit is poisoning you

1 min read

Picture this. You pull on your favourite sports bra, head to the gym, and start sweating. You think you’re doing your body a favour.

But here’s the problem.

A recent study by the Center for Environmental Health found BPA in sports bras and athletic shirts from major fast fashion brands at levels up to 40 times the safe limit.
Forty times.

When you sweat into a polyester top for an hour, those chemicals don’t sit on the surface. They go straight through your skin, bypassing the liver, and into your bloodstream.

And it’s not just BPA. Polyester routinely contains PFAS (the forever chemicals), formaldehyde, and phthalates. Every one of them is a known endocrine disruptor.

Why does that matter?

Because hormones run everything. When oestrogen or testosterone gets thrown out of balance by chemicals in your clothes, the knock-on effects reach every corner of your body. Blood sugar regulation. Fat storage. Sleep. Mood. Energy.

Hormonal disruption and insulin resistance feed each other. I write about this in my new book out on the 16th of May, The Insulin Problem. The chemicals in your gym kit could be quietly making your insulin problems worse.

The cruel irony? The harder you train, the more you absorb. The people most committed to their health are often the ones with the highest chemical exposure.

So what can you actually do?

Wash new clothes before wearing them. Choose natural fibres for anything that touches your skin for hours. Be sceptical of any fabric marketed as “performance”, “anti-bacterial” or “wrinkle-free” unless the brand can show you exactly how that’s achieved.

Properly processed bamboo gives you breathability, softness and moisture management without the chemical baggage.

It’s not a magic bullet. But it’s an honest answer to a problem most clothing brands prefer to ignore.
