Two car parks, one lesson
My daughter told me you can't have two opposite views. I told her you absolutely can. Here's why it matters for your health, not just your mood.
Picture this. I'm at the supermarket with the kids this week. Monday, we pull in and the only free spot is pretty much the furthest from the door.
"How lucky are we?" I said, climbing out. "We get our steps up."
Friday, same supermarket. This time a spot right next to the entrance. Out I hop. "How lucky are we? Straight in, straight out."
My daughter gave me a look. "Dad. You can't have two opposite views. How can both be lucky?"
I laughed. Because that question is the whole game.
Both are lucky. Because I decided they both were. Nothing else changed. Just the view through my eyes.
Here's the thing. Optimism isn't fluffy nonsense. It's a measurable health intervention. People who reframe daily hassles as small wins live around 11 to 15% longer than pessimists. Lower cortisol. Better sleep. Stronger immune systems. Lower rates of heart disease. There's a Harvard study on it if you want to look it up.
Your thoughts aren't just thoughts. They are biochemistry.
Spot the "bad" parking space and mutter under your breath, your body pours cortisol into your bloodstream. Blood pressure climbs. Inflammation kicks up. Do that 30 times a day for 30 years and that is your health quietly declining.
Spot the same space, smile, say "steps time", and cortisol stays calm. Dopamine lifts. You move your body. Your metabolism thanks you. Your brain ages more slowly.
The supermarket car park is the training ground. The queue at the post office is the training ground. The traffic jam is the training ground. Every small annoyance is an invitation to practise.
My kids will remember that car park trip. I hope they pick up the trick early. It's cheaper than Ozempic and it beats every supplement on the shelf.
Your action today: Catch one small irritation today. The slow checkout. The missed train. The weather. Reframe it out loud as a small win. Log it in your Clubwell journal under Perspective Wins. Your future self is watching.
