Cutting through misinformation to empower informed health decisions

The Crisis of Medical Misinformation

We live in an unprecedented paradox: never before has there been so much health information available, yet never before have we been so confused about what actually works. The former editor of the New England Journal of Medicine, Dr Marci Angell, delivered a sobering assessment that should shake us all: "It is simply no longer possible to believe much of the clinical research that is published, or to rely on the judgement of trusted physicians or authoritative medical guidelines."

This isn't exaggeration, it's a stark indictment of how corporate interests have corrupted the very foundation of medical knowledge.

The Illusion of Scientific Authority

Consider the parallels with history's most brazen examples of industry manipulation:

The 1940s Tobacco Industry: Advertisements proclaimed "More doctors smoke Camels than any other cigarette," weaponising medical authority to sell deadly products.

The Sugar Industry Cover-Up: In 2016, we discovered that the sugar industry had paid scientists in the 1960s to downplay sugar's role in heart disease and shift blame to fat, dietary advice that shaped decades of public health policy.

These aren't historical anomalies; they're the blueprint for how industries continue to manipulate scientific discourse today.

The Derren Brown Effect in Medical Research

Renowned illusionist Derren Brown once astounded audiences by flipping ten coins in a row, all landing heads. What viewers didn't see were the nine hours of failed attempts that preceded this "miracle." This perfectly illustrates how pharmaceutical and food industries present research, they keep flipping the coin until they get their desired outcome, then showcase only the successful results.

This selective presentation creates an illusion of efficacy whilst hiding the failures, leading to medical guidelines based on incomplete or manipulated data.

Our CRIMES Framework: Your Defence Against Deception

To navigate this maze of misinformation, we've developed the CRIMES framework. Six critical criteria you can use for evaluating any health study:

Controlled

Was the study properly controlled with comparison groups? Without proper controls, results are meaningless.

Randomised

Were participants randomly allocated to treatment groups? This ensures the only variable is the treatment itself.

Interventional

Did the study focus on altering a single factor and observe its effects? Observational studies can only suggest correlation, not causation.

Meaningful

Did the study involve sufficient participants to ensure robust findings? Small studies often produce unreliable results.

Extension

Does the treatment actually extend life, not just treat symptoms? Many treatments reduce one risk whilst creating others.

Statistics

Are results presented in absolute or relative terms? A "50% reduction in risk" sounds impressive until you discover the baseline risk was 0.02%.

If any of these criteria are compromised, proceed with extreme caution. The absence of even one can indicate that the study's conclusions are less solid than they appear.

The Statin Scandal: A Case Study in Medical Manipulation

Consider statins, prescribed to millions worldwide. According to research confirmed by Bloomberg, the Number Needed to Treat (NNT) people who haven’t had a heart attack with statins is 300, meaning you need to treat 300 people to get one positive outcome. Yet negative side effects occur in 45 times more people than those who benefit.

Our Multi-Layered Approach to Truth

At Clubwell, we don't rely on single sources or industry-funded studies. Our knowledge foundation rests on:

Our Independent Advisory Panel

We have leading experts with no pharmaceutical industry ties, providing unbiased guidance on metabolic health research.

Extensive Expert Interviews

Ongoing conversations with doctors, scientists and researchers worldwide, gathering diverse perspectives beyond mainstream medical opinion.

Funded Independent Research

We fund studies that address critical questions the industry won't ask, including research on ultra-processed foods and eating disorders.

White Paper Contributions

We contribute to and fund the public release of important research, ensuring vital health information reaches beyond academic circles.

Conference Support

We support health conferences that challenge conventional wisdom and bring together independent researchers focused on patient outcomes over profits.

The Evolution Commitment

Science evolves, and so do we. Unlike rigid medical institutions wedded to outdated guidelines, we actively seek new evidence and adjust our recommendations accordingly. When better research emerges, we evolve our approach.

This commitment to evolution over dogma sets us apart from healthcare systems that change guidance glacially, often decades after evidence emerges.

The Independence Imperative

Our advisory panel maintains complete independence from pharmaceutical and food industry funding. This isn't just ethical positioning, it's essential for objective analysis. When funding sources have vested interests in specific outcomes, research integrity becomes compromised.

We've witnessed how industry funding shapes research questions, study design, and interpretation of results. By maintaining independence, we can follow evidence wherever it leads.

From Confusion to Clarity

The health information landscape doesn't have to be confusing. When you understand how to evaluate research quality, recognise industry manipulation tactics, and access truly independent analysis, the path forward becomes remarkably clear.

Our knowledge pillar transforms you from a passive recipient of medical advice into an informed participant in your health journey. Armed with understanding of metabolic principles and the ability to discern quality research, you can navigate health decisions with confidence.

When science serves people rather than profits, remarkable transformations become possible.
