Your Mind Controls Your Health

1 min read

Right now, as you scroll through your phone, you're being bombarded with information about wars, crises, and disasters you cannot control. Every post comparing your life to someone else's curated fantasy. Every notification pulling you deeper into chaos.

Here's what I learnt when Richard Branson, a group of friends and I visited the iconic Tiger's Nest monastery in Bhutan: Buddhist detachment looks beautiful in a temple perched on a cliff, but the moment you return to real life, it falls apart. Because modern life doesn't allow withdrawal, it demands engagement.

The mind-body connection isn't philosophical, it's physiological. Your mental framework directly impacts your stress hormones, your behaviours, and ultimately your metabolic health. Which is why choosing the right philosophy matters more than you think.

Buddhism suggests detaching from worldly concerns to end suffering. Stoicism, which I am currently studying with great interest, offers something different: focus only on what you can control. You cannot control what appears in your social media feed, what others post, or global politics. But you can control whether you pick up your phone, how long you scroll, and your response to what you see.

Marcus Aurelius one of the creators of Stoicism wasn't writing his Meditations in a monastery, he was running the Roman Empire during wars and plagues. Stoicism was designed for people who couldn't retreat from chaos but had to function within it. Like you. Like me. Like everyone trying to maintain their health in a hyperconnected world.

I still meditate most days. I use Buddhist-derived mindfulness to notice when anxiety creeps in. But I now pair it with Stoic philosophy to know what to do about it: return to what I can control. This combination is powerful because it gives you both the awareness and the action plan.

Your action today: Next time you feel stressed about something, ask yourself one question: "Can I control this?" If no, consciously choose not to let it colonise your mental space. If yes, take one specific action right now.

Read the article I launches this morning “Why Stoicism, Not Buddhism, Is What We Need in 2026” to discover how strategic engagement often beats detachment, and why the chaos isn't going anywhere but your response to it is entirely within your control.
