Vitality Eleven #8: Cellular Senescence

1 min read

This one is genuinely creepy.

When cells get damaged beyond repair, they're supposed to die through a controlled process called apoptosis. It's clean, orderly, and essential. Think of it as a factory removing broken machines from the production floor.

But sometimes damaged cells refuse to die. They just... stop. They stop dividing. They stop functioning properly. But they sit there, alive, pumping out inflammatory signals that poison the cells around them.

Scientists call these senescent cells. I call them zombie cells. Because that's exactly what they are.

A few zombie cells aren't a problem. Your immune system can handle them. But as we age, and especially when insulin is chronically elevated, they accumulate. And the inflammatory compounds they release drive chronic disease and accelerate ageing across every tissue in your body.

Dr Cooper's research connects this directly to the hyperinsulinaemia cascade. High insulin damages mitochondria, which increases oxidative stress, which triggers senescence. More zombie cells, more inflammation, more disease.

The solution involves both clearing existing zombie cells and preventing new ones from forming. Certain foods contain senolytic compounds, natural substances that help eliminate senescent cells. Dark chocolate, berries, broccoli, onions, and green tea are all on the list. Good sleep and regular exercise also support your body's natural zombie-clearing systems.

Your action today: Add one senolytic food to your meals this week. Dark chocolate (85% cocoa or higher), berries, broccoli, or green tea all help your body clear zombie cells.
