Vitality Eleven #11: Dysbiosis
You are home to trillions of bacteria. Most of them live in your gut. And the balance between the good ones and the bad ones affects far more than digestion.
Your gut bacteria produce vitamins. They regulate inflammation. They train your immune system. They create protective compounds called short-chain fatty acids. When the balance is right, it's a well-tended garden. When it's wrong, it's a weed-choked wasteland.
That imbalance is called dysbiosis. And modern life is systematically causing it.
Processed foods stripped of fibre. Frequent antibiotic use. Chronic stress. Artificial sweeteners. All of these destroy gut diversity. The result? Hardy but harmful bacteria dominate. Beneficial species decline. The gut lining becomes permeable (what's often called leaky gut), and inflammatory signals flood into your bloodstream.
Dysbiosis drives weight gain, insulin resistance, depression, autoimmune conditions, and increases your risk of diseases you wouldn't normally associate with your gut.
The fix starts with fibre. Your beneficial gut bacteria feed on fibre. When you eat enough of it, they thrive and produce those protective short-chain fatty acids. When you don't, they starve and the harmful bacteria take over.
Clubwell's fibre-first approach directly addresses dysbiosis. By prioritising fibre-rich foods and tracking your daily intake, you're feeding the good bacteria and starving the bad ones. It's gardening at a microscopic level.
And with that, you've now met all eleven members of The Vitality Eleven. Every one of them interconnected. Every one of them influenced by your daily choices. Ready for the Dr Cooper interview?
Your action today: Check your fibre intake in the Clubwell app over the last week. If you're falling short, add one extra portion of vegetables or a handful of nuts to each meal this week.
