Valentine's Day

1 min read

It's Valentine's Day, and right now millions of people are buying chocolates to show they care. Walk into any hospital and you'll see nurses' stations piled high with boxes of chocolates, cakes, and biscuits, gifts meant to say "thank you" to healthcare workers.

But here's a question worth asking: when did showing love and appreciation become synonymous with giving people things that harm them? Think about it. We're literally expressing care by handing over products that the BMJ (British Medical Journal) linked to 32 harmful health outcomes, including cancer, heart disease, diabetes, and mental health disorders.

These aren't just occasional treats anymore, they're industrial formulations designed to hijack your brain's reward system, engineered with bliss points and dynamic contrast to keep you coming back for more.

The food industry has successfully convinced us that love tastes like ultra-processed chocolate, that gratitude comes wrapped in biscuits, that celebration requires cake. They've hijacked our most meaningful emotions and tied them to products that my good friend Dr Ali Ibrahim confirms are the only foods that create genuine addiction.

And the nurses receiving those chocolates? They're on the front lines of treating the very diseases these products cause. It's a perverse circle: we thank healthcare workers for treating metabolic disease by giving them the exact foods that create metabolic disease. The irony would be funny if it weren't so tragic.

Valentine's Day should be about genuine care, not corporate conditioning. Real love doesn't come in a heart-shaped box of engineered sugar and industrial seed oils. It comes in choosing to give something that actually supports someone's wellbeing, not undermines it.

Your action today: If you're celebrating Valentine's Day or thanking someone special, choose something that shows you actually care about their health. Quality time, a home-cooked meal with real ingredients, or even a simple walk together. Love shouldn't come with a side of chronic disease.
