The Milk You're Drinking Has Been Stripped of Its Best Bits
Here's something that still winds me up.
For decades, we've been told to choose skimmed or semi-skimmed milk because full fat is "bad for us." Too many calories. Too much fat. Pick the lighter option and pat yourself on the back.
But here's what nobody mentioned.
Vitamins A, D, E and K are fat-soluble. That means they need fat to be absorbed by your body. They literally dissolve in fat. No fat, no absorption. It's that simple.
When manufacturers remove the fat from milk, those four vitamins go with it. You're left with white water that looks like milk but has been robbed of some of its most valuable nutrients.
Let's be clear about what those vitamins actually do. Vitamin A supports your immune system and your eyesight. Vitamin D is essential for bone health, mood and immune function. Vitamin E protects your cells from oxidative damage. Vitamin K helps your blood clot properly and keeps calcium where it belongs, in your bones, not your arteries.
These aren't optional extras. They're essential.
So when you pour skimmed milk on your cereal (not that you are doing that anymore) or into your tea, you're getting the calories from lactose (milk sugar) but missing the good stuff that came with the fat. You've kept the sugar and ditched the nutrition. That's not a health choice.
Full-fat milk isn't the enemy. It never was. The fat in milk is exactly what makes those vitamins available to your body. Nature designed it that way for a reason.
Your action today: Next time you reach for the milk, go full fat. Check what's in your fridge right now and make the swap. Log it in your Clubwell app journal and notice how much more satisfied you feel after your next cup of coffee or tea.
