The Ancient Philosophy With "Cure" in Its Name

1 min read

I talk a lot about Stoicism. Occasionally about Buddhism. But there’s an ancient Greek philosophy I’ve never mentioned that might be the most relevant of all to your health.

It’s called Epicureanism. And yes, the word "cure" is sitting right there in the middle of it.

Now before you picture toga-wearing Greeks gorging themselves on grapes and wine, forget everything the modern word "epicurean" has come to mean. The original philosophy was the exact opposite of indulgence.

Epicurus, who founded his school in Athens around 307 BCE, taught that the goal of life is two things: ataraxia, freedom from mental anxiety, and aponia, the absence of physical pain.

Read that again. Freedom from anxiety. Absence of pain. That’s not hedonism. That’s a health prescription.

Epicurus didn’t chase pleasure in the way we understand it today. He argued that the highest pleasure is simply the absence of suffering. A calm mind. A body free from pain. Good friends. Simple food. A quiet life.

Here’s why this matters for you. Everything we do at Clubwell, every piece of advice about reducing sugar, eating fibre first, managing insulin, sleeping properly, moving your body, is aimed at exactly what Epicurus described. Removing the anxiety that comes from blood sugar crashes and cortisol spikes. Removing the physical pain that comes from inflammation, insulin resistance and chronic disease.

We’re not chasing some extraordinary state of health. We’re removing the things that make you feel terrible. The ultra-processed food. The sugar addiction. The metabolic dysfunction. Take those away and what’s left is what Epicurus promised: a calm mind and a body that works properly.

Two thousand three hundred years ago, a Gree.k philosopher figured out that the good life isn’t about adding more. It’s about removing what harms you. We’re still catching up.

Your action today: Ask yourself two questions today. What is causing me mental anxiety that I could remove? What is causing me physical discomfort that I could change? Write your answers in your Clubwell journal. The cure might be simpler than you think
