That's the way we've always done it!

Nothing used to frustrate me more when I was running my companies than finding somebody doing something inefficiently and asking them why. "Well, that's the way we've always done it," they'd say. That sort of thinking kills businesses, and right now, it might be damaging your health progress too.

When I built my teams, I created something called CPI, Continue Performance Improvement. It was ruthless. We questioned everything, optimised constantly, and never accepted "because that's what everyone does" as an answer. Here's the thing, we need to apply that same ruthlessness to our own habits.

Think about your daily routine. Your breakfast choice, your evening snack, your weekend takeaway. Are you doing these things because they genuinely serve your metabolic health, or simply because that's what you've always done? Maybe it's what your parents did, what your friends do, or what the food industry has convinced you is normal.

As you read this digest, you're probably following at least three health habits that don't actually benefit you. The morning orange juice because "it's healthy." The low-fat yoghurt because "fat is bad." The afternoon biscuit because "you deserve a treat." These aren't decisions, they're autopilot behaviours based on outdated thinking.

The Stoic philosopher Musonius Rufus said it perfectly: "In the majority of other things, we address circumstances not in accordance with the right assumptions, but mostly by following wretched habit."

Your metabolic health isn't going to improve by doing what you've always done. It improves when you question everything, test your assumptions, and build new habits based on what actually works.

Your action today: Pick one daily habit and ask yourself, "Am I doing this for the right reasons, or just because that's the way I've always done it?"
