One Scratch. 9,100 Plastic Particles

That non-stick pan you love might be the most toxic thing in your kitchen

Picture this. You’re making scrambled eggs on a Sunday morning. The pan’s got a couple of scratches on it, but it still works fine. No big deal, right?

Wrong.

Researchers at Flinders University in Australia just proved that a single crack in your non-stick Teflon coating releases up to 9,100 microplastic and nanoplastic particles straight into your food. Potentially every time you cook.

Nine thousand particles. From one scratch.

Now here’s where it gets properly frightening. The nanoplastics are millions of times smaller than a grain of sand. You can’t see them. You can’t taste them. You can’t wash them off. They end up in your gut, your blood, and potentially your brain.

We spend hours worrying about what food to buy. Organic or not? Fresh or frozen? But nobody thinks about the thing they’re cooking it in. Your pan is touching every meal you make. If the coating is damaged, it’s contaminating all of it.

I cook most days. I’ve got seven kids, so our kitchen has seen some serious action over the years. When I first read this research, I went straight to the cupboard and checked every pan. Two went in the bin that evening.

The fix is simple. Go home tonight, pull out your non-stick pans, and look at the surface. If it’s scratched, chipped, or flaking, bin it. Replace it with stainless steel, cast iron, or ceramic. Your health is worth more than a twenty-quid pan.

Microplastics are turning up everywhere now. In our water, our blood, even in placentas. But this is one source you can actually control. You can’t always filter the air you breathe or the water you drink, but you can bin a dodgy pan.

We’re so focused on what we eat that we forget what we’re cooking it with. This one’s an easy win.

Your action today: Check your pans tonight. If any non-stick coating is scratched or flaking, replace it..
