Now lets talk about walking....
And here's something that'll surprise you: going out for a walk, will most likely burn more more body fat than going for a jog!
A few year back tested this myself with a heart rate monitor and GPS. One hour of brisk walking at 60% of my maximum heart rate, versus a week later one hour of fast jogging at 90%. Same location, same time period. The results? Walking burned four times more body fat with less effort.
Here's why: when you push your pace hard, your body switches into anaerobic mode, which has to burn glucose and you have at any one time around 2,500 calories of glucose stored as glycogen in your liver and muscles. It's a temporary sugar store, and at your next meal your body will simply replenish these glycogen reserves. In my experiment, an hour of fast jogging only burned 0.02 lbs of body fat.
But when you're walking, something magical happens once you become metabolically flexible. Your body doesn't clamour for immediate energy. Instead, it happily fuels itself with body fat. That's the difference between shifting resources around and actually burning fat.
The secret to burning fat isn't in breathless, exhausting runs. It's about a serene, sustained pace where each step syncs perfectly with your breath. You control this process. This isn't about shedding pounds, it's about incinerating body fat.
Your action today: Next time you exercise specifically to lose weight, slow down. Keep your heart rate around 60% of maximum (roughly where you can hold a conversation). Your body will thank you by actually burning stored fat
