GLP-1 Weight Loss Drugs: What You Need to Know
Clubwell's stance is very clear: for some people they work very well, but for other its a false promise. Here's what you need to know.
GLP-1 receptor agonists, known by brand names like Ozempic, Wegovy, and Mounjaro, have taken the weight loss world by storm.
For some people, under proper medical supervision, these medications deliver meaningful results. Yet with approximately 5% of adults now using these drugs, understanding both their benefits and significant limitations has never been more important.
This isn't about condemning a medical intervention. It's about making informed decisions with full knowledge of what these medications actually do to your body, and crucially, what happens when you stop taking them.
The Muscle Problem Nobody Talks About
Here's what manufacturers don't emphasise: between 15% and 40% of weight loss from GLP-1 medications comes from lean body mass, not fat. You're losing precious muscle tissue alongside fat.
Why does this matter? Muscle burns significantly more energy than fat tissue. When you stop taking the medication, your reduced muscle mass means a slower metabolism.
Studies show patients typically regain their original weight within 10 to 20 months after discontinuation. Worse still, the weight returns primarily as fat, not muscle. You end up at a similar weight but with higher body fat percentage and lower muscle mass than before you started.
This creates a devastating cycle: each round of weight loss and regain leaves you metabolically worse off than before...
