Foods for Sleep and the Science Behind Them

1 min read

A Clubwell member asked me recently about foods for better sleep. My first thought was tryptophan, the amino acid that converts to serotonin and then melatonin. But then I remembered a brilliant piece of research that expanded my thinking entirely.

Here's the thing: we've been oversimplifying sleep nutrition for years. Yes, turkey and eggs contain tryptophan, which your body uses to produce melatonin, the sleep hormone. But that's just the beginning of the story.

The research revealed something fascinating. Foods rich in melatonin itself can directly support your sleep cycle. We're talking about tart cherries, which are absolute superstars in this department. One study showed participants drinking tart cherry juice experienced longer sleep duration and better sleep quality.

But it gets better. The same research highlighted foods containing specific compounds that work with your body's natural circadian rhythm. Kiwi fruit, for instance, contains serotonin and antioxidants that have been shown to improve sleep onset and duration. Two kiwis an hour before bed might be your new evening ritual.

Then there are the magnesium-rich foods: almonds, spinach, and pumpkin seeds. Magnesium helps regulate your neurotransmitters, essentially calming your nervous system and preparing your body for rest. As you read this digest, millions of people are struggling to sleep whilst being deficient in this crucial mineral.

Right now, your evening snack choices are either supporting or sabotaging your sleep. The processed, sugary options spike your blood sugar and disrupt the very circadian rhythms we discussed in previous digests.

Your action today: If you struggle with your sleep, try a small bowl of Greek yoghurt with almonds and tart cherries with your evening meal. You're giving your body the building blocks it needs for quality sleep.
