Here's something that will change how you think about weight loss forever: when you lose weight, where does it actually go?

Most doctors, nutritionists, and personal trainers get this wrong. The answer? You literally breathe it out as carbon dioxide and water vapour. Right now, as you read this, you're exhaling yesterday's dinner.

This reveals why the physical mass of what you eat matters more than the calorie count. Your body doesn't simply burn calories and store the rest. Instead, it breaks down the atomic structure of your food, extracting energy and nutrients. Once your body has harvested what it needs, the remaining atoms must be eliminated through breathing.

Think about it this way: atoms can't be created or destroyed, only transformed. After your body strips out the goodness (or badness) from what you eat, protein, fat, and carbs are all primarily made of just three elements: carbon, hydrogen, and oxygen. These atoms must be exhaled.

When you eat 500g of food, your body needs to exhale that equivalent atomic mass through your respiratory system. At rest, you exhale roughly 17g of atomic weight per hour.

Now here's where it gets fascinating. Let's examine the fundamental difference between macronutrients:

1g of carbs = 4 calories
1g of protein = 4 calories
1g of fat = 9 calories

For years, we believed fat was the culprit because it packs more than twice the calories per gram. But we were looking through the wrong end of the telescope. Losing weight isn't about vanishing calories, it's about the exchange of atoms. Double the gram weight of what we eat means doubling the atoms we need to exhale.

The NHS suggests roughly 2,000 calories daily for women and 2,500 for men. If you consumed a 2,500-calorie diet entirely from carbs and protein, you'd eat 625g of food daily.

Switch to a high-fat approach, and your plate weighs just 278g. Over a year, that's the difference between consuming 502 pounds versus 223 pounds of food.

This explains why "eat less, move more" works, but not for the reasons commonly believed. Eat fewer grams (mass) and your body has less atomic weight to offload. Move more and you breathe more, exhaling those atoms faster.
