A story Sara told me while were cycling

Picture this.

Heathrow arrivals, mid-2000s. A grumpy, stooped cab driver limps toward a group of jet-lagged travellers. He loads their bags into a black London taxi. Slowly. Painfully. He barely cracks a smile.

Some of the group roll their eyes. Some blank him completely. One woman, though, greets him warmly. Helps with the luggage. Asks how his day is going. Her name is Sara Blakely, founder of Spanx.

The group arrives at a sprawling Oxford estate. Champagne flowing. Fire crackling. Then an announcement: "Please welcome your host." In limps the cab driver. He peels off a latex mask.

Underneath is Sir Richard Branson.

Mouths drop. The ones who had blanked the driver go pale.

Richard looks around the room. "I was watching how you treated someone you thought didn't matter."

Then he turns to Sara. "Some of you showed character when you thought no one was watching."

I haven't stopped thinking about it since. Here's why it's stayed with me. That line isn't just about kindness. It's can be applied to your health.

Your results aren't built in the gym on the day someone's cheering you on. They're built at 10pm, when the fridge light comes on and nobody's watching.

The biscuit you eat alone. The walk you skip when the weather turns. The glass of water you don't bother with on a quiet afternoon. These tiny, unwitnessed moments are writing your future body.

Sara didn't treat that cab driver well because she suspected Branson was under the mask. She treated him well because that's who she is.

Be the person who looks after yourself the same way. Whether the world is watching or not. Your 80-year-old self will thank you.
