Turkey: Not Just for Christmas, but All Year Round!
When you think of turkey, it’s hard not to picture the centrepiece of a festive Christmas table, but is turkey really just for the holidays?
When you think of turkey, it’s hard not to picture the centrepiece of a festive Christmas table, but is turkey really just for the holidays? While tradition traces back to Henry VII, and Christmas wouldn't feel quite the same without it, turkey shouldn’t be relegated to just one day a year. In fact, there are plenty of good reasons to enjoy turkey all year round, even if it tends to be in higher demand—and therefore more expensive—during the festive season.
Let’s talk price. Turkey is generally more expensive than chicken, but it’s not as big of a price gap as you might think. Turkeys are larger birds, they take longer to reach market weight, require more feed, and take up more space. However, when it comes to the cost per kilo of edible meat, turkey isn’t much pricier than chicken. At the time of writing, supermarket prices for chicken breast range from £6.90 to £8.90 per kilo, while turkey breast comes in at around £9.20 to £10 per kilo. That’s not a huge leap—and when compared to other meats like beef, turkey is quite reasonably priced.
Nutritional Benefits of Turkey
When it comes to health, turkey really shines. Both turkey and chicken are lean, healthy options, but turkey tends to be lower in calories, fat, and sodium, making it a slightly better choice if you’re watching your diet...
