Trout and salmon are both part of the Salmonidae family, making them close relatives. However, despite their family ties, they lead very different lives in the wild. Both are migratory fish, meaning they don’t stay in one place throughout their entire lives. Trout are typically born in upstream freshwater areas and migrate downstream to a lake, river, or wetland as they mature. They’ll spend most of their lives in these freshwater environments, returning upstream only to spawn.
While salmon share a similar journey upstream, their migration can take them to saltwater, where they spend their adult lives before returning to freshwater to spawn. Some salmon species, however, remain in freshwater throughout their lives, much like certain trout species. The complexity of these fish families is fascinating, but it’s impossible to generalise too much about either, given the many sub-species that exist...
